Whether you’re new to essential oils or have been using them for awhile, essential oils are two words: AH MAZING.

I’m Raven and I’m totally an essential oil junkie
…and that’s putting it mildly!

I’ve been using essential oils as a regular part of my life for years. I use them around my house for cleaning, in personal care, in my food and drinks, and so much more.

They absolutely are, in my opinion, one of nature’s greatest gifts.

Essential oils can support every BODY from newborn to golden years to heal themselves –  which is what our bodies do best!

In fact, with better dietary and exercise patterns, essential oils can contribute to disease prevention and better overall health.

I LOVE to use essential oils to support a TON of things, like:

Boosting my mood after a bad day…or if it’s *that* time of the month

My immune system to keep me healthy and strong

Reducing sad or anxious feelings, helping me relax calm my emotions, soothe away tension and stress, relieve restlessness or eliminate irritability (not that I’m ever cranky!)

Minor aches and muscle pain (non-disease related), and joint comfort and function (their powerful polyphenols make sure I keep movin’ smooth)

Seasonal or environmental threats

Occasional sleeplessness

As a dietary aid to help with weight loss

And, I can attest to how powerful they are from my own personal experience after severe injuries from a series of accidents - in fact, one accident in 2015 almost killed me.

I’m here to empower and educate about essential oils so you can get the most from these amazing natural solutions.

I always ask someone new two questions:

  1. What piqued your interest about essential oils? I know they’re amazing and I want you to know and believe that too. This is a HUGE movement and such an incredible thing to bring into our homes and lives empowering us to take control of our health.
  1. What are your top 3 reasons you want to bring essential oils and natural solutions into your home and life? For example, do you want to have an overall better wellness and more natural approach to health? Do you want to support your mood, relieve minor aches and pains, seasonal threats, use in skin care, cleaning, or cooking? Or do you want to DIY? I could go on and on, but the bottom line is, what are your 3 reasons? This is where you should start

Why YOU decide to use essential oils is entirely up to you - everyone has their own personal story or reason.

What are essential oils?

If you’ve ever stopped to smell lavender, peppermint or roses in your garden, you’ve already experienced the natural state of essential oils. Essential oils are naturally-occurring aromatic compounds found in plants, such as seeds, bark, stems, roots, and blossoms.

They support you by promoting emotional purification and anchor in healthy biochemistry.

Essential oils can be used individually or blended and combined for different applications and desired results. Now, I personally use dōTERRA, which has two types of oils: single oils and blends.

A single oil would be an oil like Lavender, and a blend would be a combination of oils, like Serenity. I listed these two together because Serenity is a blend with Lavender in it, along with other oils like Roman Chamomile, Sweet Marjoram, Ylang, Ylang, Hawaiian Sandalwood and Vanilla.

MAKE SENSE? OH, THE WORLD OF ESSENTIAL OILS. IT’S INCREDIBLE, AND I CAN’T WAIT TO BE PART OF THAT JOURNEY WITH YOU!

Quality and purity count

Just like we can’t live without our heart, liver, and lungs, plants can’t live without their lifeblood” of essential oils. The plant simply can’t grow.

Essential oils that aren’t pure are like an organ that’s been transplanted into our bodies - it’s just not the same. We even have to take medication to help our bodies "accept" the new organ that we weren’t born with.

I say this is the same for essential oils that aren’t pure, like dōTERRA. They’re simply not the same because of how and where they’re sourced, plus fillers and other unnatural ingredients that are added reduce their effectiveness. Therefore, their therapeutic value is adulterated.

Many essential oils you purchase at the grocery or discount stores aren’t pure and are packed with fillers. That’s why it can often appear that more of one type of essential oil is being sold than is being produced.

How does this happen?  Because many companies are downright dishonest.

If your essential oils aren’t pure, you won’t have consistent results.

If you’ve ever tried essential oils and didn’t get good (or any) results and don’t think they work it’s probably because you’re using a poor quality of oil. When choosing an essential oil company, do your research.

I can’t tell you how many people I speak to who think the $4.99 essential oils the buy at the health food, grocery or discount store are the real thing. It’s not their fault, but I’m always thrilled to introduce them to dōTERRA! There IS a reason they’re the #1 essential oil company in the World.

Consider the following questions:

1. Where were the plants grown? Oil composition can vary depending upon the geographic source.  Pure essential oils are gathered from plants that are indigenous to the region. Where the plants come from is HUGE, and my number one consideration.

2. How and when were the plants harvested? Plants must be harvested at varying times of the year and even specific times of the day in order to maintain a potent chemical composition.

3. What is the distillation process? Distillation times and temperatures can make a difference in oil purity.  Temperature and pressure must be closely monitored.

4. What type of testing is done? There are several tests that dōTERRA’s essential oils go through to determine oil purity, but two of the standard tests are mass spectrometry and gas chromatography. Essential oils will also be tested against an ideal standard.

5. Are all batches tested? The mass spectrometry test is fairly expensive, thus, not all oil companies test every batch for purity. Testing of every batch ensures consistency in therapeutic use.

6. Are the essential oils safe for consumption? Essential oils can be identified with a supplement label indicating a “GRAS” rating (Generally Recognized as Safe) for internal consumption.

My discovery

I discovered the amazing power of essential oils and dōTERRA, and their incredible ability to support my own body in healing itself after two accidents left me in a bad way.

I was determined to turn my life around naturally and holistically. Just 35 days after taking matters into my own hands, with the support my body received from natural sources, including essential oils, I saw results from the healing process.

My moods were more balanced (not as cranky, which my family was grateful for!), and my physical condition was starting to drastically improve. I was in awe!

That’s when I decided to step up and become a holistic health and life coach, and empower others through healthy, life-changing natural products.

How do I use essential oils?

Without digging through the PILES of notes and tons of DIY recipes I have on this,
there are 3 ways essential oils are typically used:

Aromatic

The sense of smell is a tool that has powerful physiological, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system by way of the olfactory nerve. The limbic system is part of the brain that supports a variety of functions including smell, emotions, behavior, and memory. For this reason, essential oils have an especially powerful effect via aromatic application.

EMOTIONS are information- carrying molecules that bind to and react with cell receptors. They go into the cell, impacting function and behavior.

ESSENTIAL OILS:

Support cell receptors
Promote healthy cell function
Maintain cell’s natural state

Some essential oils help with lifting your mood or energizing you after a long day, while others are more calming. Diffusion is one of the simplest methods for using essential oils aromatically (diffusers that use cold air or water are ideal).

However, you can use essential oils aromatically without a diffuser by placing a few drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand then cupping it around the nose and breathing deeply.

Additional aromatic uses For Essential Oils Include:
Applying oil to a cotton ball and placing in the air vents of your car or under the seat
Mixing oils with water in a spray bottle as a furniture, linen or carpet freshener
Adding oil to dryer sheets or the laundry
In surface cleaners for your home

Of course, before using essential oils, it’s always best to consult a knowledgeable professional like me to guide you through the proper handling, safety and use of essential oils. Your safety is important to me - if you have questions, I’m here to help!

Whatever way you choose to enjoy essential oils, I’m here to empower you to make the right decisions, become more comfortable with using essential oils and discover their true potential!

Topical (absorbed through your skin)

Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils, and my favorite way to get the benefits from them!

Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are fat-soluble, they’re easily absorbed, and will stay in the applied area (for example, on the temples) for a localized benefit.

Although essential oils are readily absorbed, there are many ways you can increase absorption. For instance, you can use a light massage to increase blood flow to the area where you’re applying it, which improves distribution throughout the body. Or, you can use a carrier oil to increase absorption, especially on skin that’s dry or flaky, adding moisture to the skin and slowing evaporation of the oil.

To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it’s advisable to use a carrier oil (my fav's are Fractionated Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Almond Oil) to dilute more potent essential oils and when trying an essential oil for the first time. The recommended dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier.

It’s always a good idea to use several small doses of essential oils throughout the day rather than one large dose. Start with the lowest possible dose (1–2 drops). A topical dose can be repeated every 4–6 hours as needed.

Everyone’s unique, so the dose will vary for each individual based on size, age, and overall health status.

Beneficial Areas You Can Apply Essential Oils
Neck (blood-brain barrier)
Forehead and temples
Chest and abdomen
Arms, legs, bottom of feet

Other Effective Methods of Topical Application
Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath
Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area
Add oil to a lotion or moisturizer and then apply to skin

There are SO many different ways to use essential oils in personal care items like:

Eye makeup remover
Bug spray
Foot scrub
Body scrubs
Hand sanitizers
Laundry detergent
Cleaning products
and more

These personal care items give you all the topical benefits of essential oils in things you use everyday.

Avoid these sensitive spots
Some facial areas, such as the skin around the eyes
Eyes and inner ears
Broken, damaged, or otherwise injured skin

Internal (in your food)

Certain essential oils have a rich history in cuisine, and can be used as dietary supplements to support a variety of health conditions. Anytime you sprinkle cinnamon on your oatmeal, sip peppermint tea, or add fresh basil leaves to your tomato sauce, you’re actually consuming essential oils!

As well as adding great flavor and aroma to foods, essential oils contribute health benefits. When in concentrated form, essential oils can be used as dietary supplements for more targeted and potent health benefits.

Using essential oils internally is a safe and effective method of application because of the sophisticated physiologic processes of our bodies. (I told you our bodies are awesome, right?!)

When ingested, essential oils enter the bloodstream directly through the gastrointestinal tract, where they’re transported and distributed throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid (fat) soluble so they’re quickly sent to all organs of the body, including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolized by the liver and other organs and are then excreted.

The composition of essential oils is highly complex. The properties of each react with cells and organs in different ways. Although these mechanisms of action are not completely understood, the positive end results have been demonstrated. However, the body is only equipped to handle appropriate doses of essential oils, so a little goes a long way.

You should follow all label directions when it comes to dosage and other professional guidelines to avoid toxicity.

Something to watch for in essential oil manufacturers:

dōTERRA takes care to ensure their products are carefully labeled so you can easily tell which ones are safe to take internally. Make sure yours are safe - check the label!

Did you know that applying essential oils on your skin for 30 seconds is another great way to enjoy them internally?

Effective Methods of Internal Application

Use oils in recipes for cooking or baking to replace fresh or dried herbs and spices
Remember that essential oils are super concentrated and more potent than dried or fresh herbs and spices, so start with a very small amount!
For stronger, more potent oils, it may be better to administer them by toothpicks (dip the end of a clean toothpick into the oil and then add to the food) rather than drops
You can add essential oils to water, smoothies, milk, tea, or other drinks
Or, take essential oils internally in a veggie capsule or add to a small amount of applesauce or yogurt

You clear your mind thought by thought.
You heal yourself moment by moment.”
